JEWELRY FACTS
In the last 2 decades in the jewelry industry, there have been many names created that basically mean exactly the same thing. GOLD: Technibond, Diamonique, Overlay, Bonded, Sealed, Clad, Layered etc, etc., etc. They all refer to gold electroplating since there is just one method for permanently affixing a precious metal to a BASE METAL in fashion jewelry manufacturing.
About Silver
The characteristics of silver are fascinating to the scientist, the historian, and the jewelry collector. To the scientist, silver is the only metal that remains liquid at room temperatures. The liquid silver moves in a maddening manner that it could not be easily caught and it led to the term “quicksilver.” But silver is very useful for various industries. It conducts electricity and it is important in the development of images in photography.
To the historian, silver was mined for coinage, as well as for jewelry and other ornaments. Ancient Egyptian amulets are made of silver. In Greek mythology, the period when humans began developing civilizations was called the Silver Age. In Celtic mythology, the brave warrior Nuada, who lost his hand in one battle, was awarded with a silver hand by the Irish god of healing Dian Cecht. In Christian religion, Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 silver coins. Without doubt, silver played important roles in history and literature.
To the jewelry collector, silver jewelry is popular because of its undeniable luster, powerful symbolism, versatility, and strength. Silver is the most brilliant of all jewels because of the polished metallic luster. Silver also represents the moon, which is the symbol of feminine energy. This is why many women have more than one silver jewels in their jewelry box or armoire. Silver jewelry is versatile and can be easily crafted to form rings, necklaces, charms, chains, earrings, and more.
However, the jewelry made of silver cannot be 100% pure. Silver must be with an alloy that will keep the jewelry durable enough for everyday use. The purest silver jewelry, which is called sterling silver, is .925 percent silver. The remaining .075 percent is the least amount of alloy that can keep the jewelry together without significantly reducing the undeniable luster.
